Crossing over from Deeside to Donside involves a bit of climbing wherever you do it in rural Aberdeenshire, but it’s beautiful countryside with some great roads for cycling. This ride is exactly 19 miles and scores 6 points. We leave the town of Banchory to the west and leave the A93 just on the edge of town at Inchmarlo golf club. A wee climb here quickly gets the heat up again if you are starting out of restarting from Banchory. The minor roads through Glassel have warning signs for deer and they do appear with some danger to cyclist, so beware. After 5 miles you will turn left onto the A980 with a 2 mile run into the village of Torphins. Most of the routes shared here do avoid riding for any distance on A roads so this section is not perfect leisurely cycling, but it’s seldom too busy out here. There are local facilities in Torphins where you can find mini supermarket, hotel and Cafe (Platform 22 is a favourite with many local riders).
Beyond Torphins there is another section on the A-road going steady uphill before turning off onto road signposted to Tornaveen. There is fine Aberdeenshire countryside on view all around on this section. After joining the B9119 the road climbs more significantly to Tullochvenus. Great views to the right, look back towards the East Coast. The final six miles head directly north into Alford on rolling hills.
