Westhill To Aberdeen (5 Miles)

This route is short and easy and deserves a difficulty rating of two. Starting in Westhill, you will cycle 4.5 miles to the west side of Aberdeen with 148 feet of climbing on the way. This is essentially a feeder route to either get you home, or into Aberdeen so you can start the next leg of your cycle. You will also be forced to stop on a number of occasions to negotiate some very busy junctions, so please use caution on this route.Westhill is a fairly new town, having been founded in 1963. It has grown considerably since then and has a population of around 13,000. Before Covid, the population would swell considerably during the day due to the number of oil and gas and sub-sea companies that call Westhill home.Starting from the town centre, you join a cycle path that sits alongside the busy A944. This route is not the prettiest but it does have some interesting features and also gives a snapshot of how Aberdeen and its environs have developed since oil was found in the North Sea on the 1970s. The route first passes the new Aberdeen Football Club training facility at Kingsford, which is also the potential site for a new stadium for the club. You will then cross the new Aberdeen ring road at 1.5 miles, which is also the high point of the route at 482 feet, as well as the huge Prime Four business park. The route finishes at Hazlehead Park, and just before arriving there is a nature reserve at Den of Maidencraig. The park is well worth a visit with some lovely features, walks, activities and a caf.By clicking on the play symbol on the graphic below you can see route map.
